EPA vs Reality: 2024 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Fuel Economy Test

Realizamos una prueba controlada de economía de combustible en un Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD 2024, combinando diferentes tipos de conducción, para comprobar qué tan cerca están sus calificaciones de la EPA de los resultados en la vida real, utilizando tanto mediciones de bomba a bomba como el ordenador de a bordo.

Nuestro vehículo de prueba fue un RAV4 Hybrid XLE AWD 2024 (219 hp, motor I4 de ciclo Atkinson de 2.5L con dos generadores, eCVT). Su peso en vacío es de poco menos de 3,800 lb, y monta neumáticos 225/65R17 para todas las estaciones. La EPA califica esta configuración en 41 mpg en ciudad, 38 en carretera y 40 combinados con gasolina regular de 87 octanos. Diseñamos un recorrido de 200.4 millas: aproximadamente 140 millas en autopista a 70 mph y 60 millas en arterias suburbanas con límites de 35 a 50 mph y semáforos frecuentes.

Las temperaturas ambientales variaron entre 64 y 72°F con ligeras ráfagas de viento cruzado (5–10 mph). La presión de los neumáticos se ajustó a 35 psi en frío, con dos ocupantes a bordo (aproximadamente 350 lb en total), el aire acondicionado a 72°F en modo automático, y sin portaequipajes ni carga externa. Utilizamos el método de llenado a tope/pump-to-pump y verificamos con el ordenador de a bordo. En la parte de carretera, el RAV4 Hybrid devolvió 36.5 mpg (corregido por bomba), frente a los 38 mpg que indica la EPA para carretera.

A una velocidad real de 68–70 mph, el motor se estabilizó cerca de 1,800–2,200 rpm bajo carga ligera, con los motores eléctricos apoyando en pendientes moderadas. Una breve zona de construcción de 3 millas a 45 mph incrementó la eficiencia, destacando cómo incluso pequeñas reducciones en la velocidad de crucero benefician a los híbridos. El viento y los cambios de elevación suaves (±250 ft) tuvieron un efecto notable pero limitado. En conducción suburbana, el sistema híbrido brilló: 44.8 mpg (corregido por bomba) frente a los 41 mpg que califica la EPA para ciudad.

El coche pasó bastante tiempo en modo EV hasta aproximadamente 25–30 mph con un acelerador suave, y la frenada regenerativa capturó mucha energía en el tráfico de alto y bajo. La mezcla de frenos se sintió natural, aunque las entradas de pedal muy ligeras aún ofrecían un mordisco inicial algo brusco. Las cargas del aire acondicionado fueron moderadas a estas temperaturas; se espera una penalización mayor en pleno verano o invierno. A lo largo de todo el recorrido de 200.4 millas, registramos 39.7 mpg al llenar hasta el tope (198.7 millas indicadas al reabastecer, se añadieron 5.00 galones), mientras que el ordenador de a bordo marcó 40.2 mpg, lo que es aproximadamente un 1.2% optimista.

El motor trasero del eAWD se activó de manera discreta durante lanzamientos enérgicos sobre una superficie húmeda, pero no afectó materialmente el consumo. Los niveles de ruido fueron bajos a velocidad constante, y el eCVT mantuvo el motor en su rango de eficiencia; un zumbido pronunciado solo apareció durante largas pendientes. En general, el RAV4 Hybrid cumple con su reclamo de 40 mpg combinados de la EPA en clima templado y con velocidades controladas, superándolo en la ciudad y quedando un poco corto a 70 mph en carretera. Los conductores que mantengan 65 mph, anticipen paradas y mantengan los neumáticos en especificaciones deberían alcanzar o superar los 40 mpg.

En temperaturas más frías, planifica una caída del 10–15% hasta que el tren motriz se caliente. Si tus trayectos son mayormente urbanos o suburbanos, la inversión en híbrido se recupera rápidamente; los que recorren largas distancias por carretera aún verán una ventaja sobre el RAV4 no híbrido, aunque será menor.
